How Are You Coping with the Economic Downturn? Is the Crisis Changing You For the Better?
My San Francisco-based team of filmmakers is producing another short documentary that continues to explore how the economic downturn is an opportunity for personal transformation and positive social change. We are shooting interviews in Northern California during July 2009. We are looking for three kinds of people to be interviewed and featured in the film:
1 – People who have been directly affected by the downturn and have found the crisis to be an opportunity to reassess what really matters in life and make positive changes in how they live.
If the economy has caused you to get laid off, lose your home or investments, change your living situation, make a significant career shift, struggle to make ends meet or if you are experiencing any other consequence of the economic downturn, we want to hear from you!
2 – Professionals and advocates who work in real estate, credit counseling, career counseling, mortgage lending, social services or finance and who work DIRECTLY with people who are dealing with the negative effects of the economic downturn, and who can comment on trends you are seeing in the crisis.
3 – Authors, bloggers and cultural commentators who can talk about the meaning and significance of personal transformation in times of great social transformation.
If you are interested in being interviewed, please write to interviewopportunity@gmail.com or leave a message at (707) 317-1476.
Describe your situation and background and why you would like to be in the film. Please provide your age and specific location in Northern California. We will contact you if we are interested in learning more about your story. Thank you!

Cathy,
I just came across your short documentary (wonderful!) and your blog through our mutual friend, Sam Lawrence. I am happy to assist you in your project if you like.
After my ex and I both got laid off from our dot-com jobs in the post 9/11 world, we took a 6-month roadtrip across America; we sold our condo; relocated from Chicago to Portland, OR in 2002; I took a dream job in the wine industry in 2003; and then in 2004, I created a company, VocationVacations (www.vocationvacations.com), that helps people make their career transitions via mentorship experiences.
Today, VocationVacations provides people 1-3 day career mentorship experiences in nearly 200 vocation types across 35 states. My team and I have assisted thousands of people make successful career transitions (either due to a lay-off or simply due to a personal desire for change) through career mentorship.
So, not only am I a poster child for career reinvention after being laid off, but I also practice what I preach every day. We have a ton of vocationer alums who have seen opportunity in being laid off. Twenty-five percent of our alums are now in their dream jobs, have created their dream business or are back in school getting the accreditation they need to move forward after first taking the baby step of career change through a VocationVacation. With time, that percentage will grow. We’ve only just begun the revolution. 🙂
Happy to chat….love what you’re doing!

Dear Catherine,
I just read an article about you in Yahoo! and I felt I want to be your friend. I live in Idaho, I came here in year 2000 from Bulgaria. Like you, I have discovered that prestigious jobs alone are not fulfilling and have tried to orient my kids to pursue independent careers. Currently, my son is studying at Film and Theater School in Sofia and my daughter is building he designer business (translating high-fashion ideas into affordable clothing for youngsters:).
I wish you success.
